Founder’s story

I have been a teacher in my home city Hong Kong for 11 years. I used to teach a unique subject called Liberal Studies, which emphasizes critical thinking and multiple perspective analysis. The satisfaction to connect and inspire young minds has been one of my strongest motivations to bring forth impactful education.

There came a moment amid the significant social movement in my home city in 2014 when young people became active citizens and were zealous in taking civic actions.  Those striking scenes of their engagement in the public sphere provoked me to rethink the role as a teacher and of education. I began to reimagine what kind of education we need to help these young people strive in these times of uncertainty. The big quest eventually led me to learn about some evolving areas in education which are essential nowadays yet have not yet been widely included in formal education in most parts of the world. For instance, global citizenship education, digital and media literacy, 21st-century skills, and future literacy.

My desire to promote future-oriented education begins to grow. I believe we need education that is not only relevant to the times we are in, but also leads to a better common future. I need to start from somewhere to build a future that I desire to see—young people are competent and confident to succeed in creating an exciting and desirable future, and that teachers play a meaningful part in it. Futurology is the beginning of a thousand-mile journey, I am excited to see what future it leads me to.

If we teach today’s students as we taught yesterday’s, we rob them of tomorrow.
